Martha Shafer – Community Volunteer

Version 2

After a career as a healthcare executive with Cone Health, I was busy like most people: raising two daughters, caring for my parents, and doing volunteer work in the community. I coached a Battle of the Books team at my daughter’s lower and middle school, and founded a Fine Arts Booster Club in our local high school. As a passionate theatre mom, I travelled to drama competitions, helped backstage, up front, and raised funds to support the arts in our high school. I also volunteered in leadership positions in our church, St. Francis Episcopal Church.

My husband Don and I have watched our youngest daughter excel at ballroom dance. We love the joy she gets from practice and delight in the amazing self-confidence she’s gained attending competitions across the South. Her second home is at Fred Astaire Dance Studio, which is one of the warmest and fun places we’ve ever been.  My sister and brother-in-law dance there too, so it’s a true family affair!

Now that our youngest is away in college, I’m an empty nester and have time in my life for a new hobby.  I’ve begun ballroom dance lessons of my own!  But I’ve missed work helping schools.  So, I’m excitedly taking the stage with High Point Dancing with the Stars to combine my newfound love of dancing with important work I value by supporting Communities In Schools.
